As musicians, we are great admirers of all kinds of music from rock to jazz to hip-hop. We decided to use an idea we had for another song which was based around the Ronnie Foster jazz song “Mystic Brew” as used by A Tribe Called Quest for their classic “Electric Relaxation”.
However we did not want to sample the record but rather replay the chords and bass using live instruments and add our own musical ideas around the track. Having never heard this melody being used in dance music, we thought wow! because we were now using our inspiration from a hip-hop record which was originally inspired by a jazz record to now inspire our house record.
Again, we never wanted to do anything too heavy vocally so we played around with little hook ideas and “Just a Little Bit” came together very naturally for us to record and definitely gave us a summery feeling. The key to making this track work was not over saturating the track with vocals in terms of typical verse and chorus styled writing, but instead, giving the listener a journey of something smooth all throughout. .
It was not easy to arrange this song because of the various different vocal samples that heavily interplay with each other but the result for us was great because we knew we made something that was not to be easily replicated vocally.
We chose some rim shots and more wooden sounding drums rather than typical house music drums because we felt it important to keep that live / hip-hop feel within the project.
